IN PURSUIT OF ATARAXIA

by Irene Kontakos

Irene is a South Australian-based artist who works predominantly in oil paint. She holds a Bachelor of Visual Art (Honours) from the Adelaide Central School of Art and has recently returned to making and exhibiting work after further study and becoming a mother of two children.

Irene’s work explores ideas around paring back, deceleration, reconnecting with nature, and the ephemerality of the human body. This is represented in her current work through the use of partial figures within abstract spaces.

THE MOUNTAIN OF MAGIC

by Paul Thorsen

Hello, my name is Paul Thorsen. I grew up in a small town, went to university and spent 7 years, just to leave with a useful degree in the wrong hands. I found fulfilling work but unable to express my feelings and fell into a deep weed filled depression. I was hiding from joy and art became my understanding of how I feel.

In the beginning art was a hunt for meaning in a bipolar world. I initially tried to emulate van Gogh but then I began to paint as part of my employment. I’d been working with people with intellectual disabilities and their parents spotted my new interest. I can't not be influenced by the art my clients create and often I include childlike imagery. Thus a style is beginning to emerge.

This is my first live art presentation and it lacks any overarching theme. It echoes the lack of coherence to my life. My exhibition, the mountain of magic, intends to present a modicum of my favourites over the last 5-6 years. See you there? Yes, I hear you say! Why thank you you’ve made me feel Magical, says I.
